Scotch @ Ten 01

It is a week past and I am still thinking about some of the whisky we tried at last week’s Scotch tasting at Ten 01. We were honored to host Mr. Michael Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail, Scotland. Gordon & MacPhail are leading Scotch Specialists and the owners of Benromach Distillery .
Gordon & MacPhail, an independent bottler, continues a unique Scottish tradition. Typically selected for blends like Dewars & Johnny Walker, Gordon & MacPhail buy whisky from other distillers not for blending but to be aged and bottled as single malts.
On Tuesday we tried four of their single malts: the Benromach Traditional, the new Benromach Organic, Linkwood 15yr and Mortlach 15yr.
Mr. Urquhart, who spoke to a packed room of forty guests, spoke eloquently of whisky production, malting, the differences between sherry & bourbon cask finishes and was a delight to all who attended.
Michael’s family, Gordon & MacPhail have been buying whisky from different distilleries, aging them in their own oak, and bottling them by hand for over a hundred years.
Also in the house on Tuesday was Stuart Ramsay, whisky author and specialist who helped guide us through the evening and poured out drams while Michael spoke.
Stuart and I plan to do a couple other tastings similar to this one in the coming months. If you would like to get updates on when these will take place send me an e-mail and let me know.
Until then here is a video about Benromach.
